whelp

got the sutures out today.

And so now my neck is bugging me below the sutures (the area that is bugging is basically at the front of the shoulder.) The sutures hide below most of the neck line of my shirts--the V part of the buttons does show the seam. Kinda low for pulling out a thyriod, but it'll show up less once it heals I guess.

So I suppose the part of me that is feeling bugged is just upset that it got left out. Or maybe there is still some form of residual drainage. The doctor took out the drainage tube on Wednesday, and it didn't heal over and kept leaking until late on Saturday. Even today the band-aide wasn't 100% clean. So there might be a bit of fluid still being generated. After all, my body is missing a big lump of material (supposedly the removed thyroid was over 3" long.)

anyways

so I had the right lobe of my thyroid remove as well as the isthmus. The surgery went well, but the immediate after surgery recovery was horrible, but it is all a blur. I guess I was gotten too dehydrated during surgery (mostly sweating) and so I didn't come out of the anesthesia cleanly, and they had me on extra IVs and Oxygen for the rest of the day. But today--the day after--I'm all find and out and about and stuf. Sitting at home, checking my e-mail, and then I'll rest in front of the TV.

The enlarged thyroid had been impacted my ability to swallow, and just general disturbance. According to the blood tests taken a year ago, everything was normal, and even with tests done a couple months ago, there are no indications of bad things. Just abnormal thyroid growth, which is apparently quite common.

However it does remind me that I should find a general/family/whatever doctor and discuss depression and social anxiety.

Coca Cola vs Coke Zero

Coke Zero does not taste like Coca Cola. I don't care what the TV commercials claim. Coke Zero tastes considerably more bitter than Coca Cola.

At least that's my opinion of these two liter bottles.

--Mr Sweet.

humor out of my inbox. (which means it is probably older than dirt.)

The American Medical Association has weighed in on the new health care package.

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception. Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted. Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the Pediatricians said, 'Oh, Grow up!'

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it. Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing. The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter."

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea. The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington.

outdoors

I was outdoors again today. Went over to Discovery park and took their 2.8 mile loop trail. Only took me 1.5 hours to walk it. Although recently I have been trying to go over to Golden Gardens (neighborhood beach) about once a week or every other week. I at least get half an hour to an hour walking on the beach. But today's walk (dare I call it a hike even though it isn't extremely hilly), was more exercise, even after its first half hour.

But I realized that lately me and the outdoors has been like oil and vinegar salad dressing. You can force the two to mix, but they quickly separate out again. I'd rather be indoors somewhere with air conditioning (which my house doesn't have, grr.)

Oh yeah, and it was way too hot outside. It's felt like a hotter summer the last few weeks than the prior years I've been here.

it's the 3rd of July!

So, I don't like being old. So I figured that today I turned 24. But in some ways I like doing it in base-2 since it is 100 100. Kinda a neat number.

I remember when I first got my current job and I was still 21h old. I told my coworkers that I was 21, and the look on the one lady's face was priceless. Cause I really did look early 30s at the time (33 if you can't do the math of what 21h is). So she was trying to rectify 21 and 33 and didn't come up with hex until some other people on the team told her. She's was 23 or 24 (decimal) at the time, so she was flabergasted that I'd only be 21.

Anyways, the real thing about today is that it is a holiday since the 4th is on Saturday. I like paid holidays on my birthday.

I did get my pocket rebuilt. It has been a long time since I did any sewing, so the seam looks like crap. but nobody will notice (hey, I never look at the pocket and if anybody else is they're sneaking into my house while I sleep.)

Oh yeah, life is just the same-ole-same-old day-in-day-out.
Yay! manglement finally listened (to me and the rest of the team) and changed my title from SDE (Software Development Engineer) to SE (Systems Engineer aka System Administrator.) Now I can be reviewed based on what I"m actually doing. Although they need to get me a promotion, since SEs make less than SDEs, so they have to give me a more senior title, but that takes work that nobody really wants to do. But at least now nobody can complain if I say I spent all day helping the on-call. That's now my job :)

And last week I bought some new music. I hadn't done that in a while. There is Mila Mar, Alphaville, and Inkubus Sukkubus. After today it'll just get lost in the rest of the playlist. I also had to buy new fitted sheets. Those are too expensive. I wonder what the raw fabric costs and if I should just make my own. I know lots of people just use flat sheets.

And about 2.5 weeks until I'm 0x23. I gotta pretend to be young somehow.

Time to get some work done.
I'm working too hard. I even started this last night and didn't get to it till today.

Though today [edit: yesterday aka Sunday] I'm catching up on some tv while working. Watching "Fearless Planet" episodes that were recorded in November. One show about Alaska was complaining that the melting of the ice was bad because it meant that less sunlight was being reflected away from the planet. Another show is complaining that the growth of the Sahara is causing more sunlight to be reflected and warming up the air. So which do we want? More reflection or less reflection? It just seems like no matter what the earth is doing it is bad and this show just wanted to complain. Is there some balance between the 5K square miles per year of new desert offsetting the glacier melt? Is the net global difference a gain or a loss?

I'm mad...

Mad at myself though. Stupid me forgot to lock my car door on Saturday after bringing in the groceries. So sometime between then and this [Monday] morning, somebody had went rifling through my car. You know, the basics, the glove compartment was open and the ash tray was open. They weren't even smart enough to take the change between the seats and the item that is in the back hatch. They did take the jacket that was in the car. Grumble, it was a gift and I don't even know what store it came from. It was nice and more than enough for Seattle--hell it was enough for me in Denver. Anyways, so now I guess I need to buy a new jacket. I wonder where to go. I'm not used to shopping for that kind of stuff, and this jacket was still in nice shape even though it is 8-10 years old.

New Years Eve

Anyways, being a hermit I just stayed at home for NYE.

I tried to do a homemade isolation tank type thing. My tub is too short and I didn't have enough epsom salts. In fact I was hundreds of pounds short. But the floating was relaxing. It would basically be cheaper just to go to a real flotation tank, except for length of time that I got out of it and the convenience. Buying epsom salts 4 pounds at a time is expensive (50 cents a pound after tax.) Though this way I did get 3 hours in, which actually means that what I did was cheaper--oh and I was at home. Not really isolation tank quality though (like my room wasn't body temp, not enough salt, etc.) I really need a longer/wider tub. So I was generally resting my head on the tub, or else having my legs crossed. But it was fun.

I wonder if regular salt is enough cheaper. Or if that many hours in salt would be a problem. What else dissolves well enough in water and doesn't make a big sticky mess and can safely go down the drain? (e.g., flour and sugar are out.) Does another substance effect the density (e.g., buoyancy) differently, or is it strictly a function of the weight of dissolved material? I also wonder about a mix of regular salt and epsom salt?

I was surprised at how much the water cooled off adding the epsom salts to it, but then after that it didn't cool off as fast as plain water.

But I might do that again. Less water and more salt and some better heating of it.

F***ing TiVo.

I'm sick of my TiVo. It is time to find something better. There has got to be an application out there that doesn't willy-nilly delete stuff simply because it wants to record something.

I had every program setup so that it had a keep until date of after this evening. But the TiVo decided to record something and so it just deleted all kinds of stuff. And there is no easy way to go through and know what it deleted (don't get me started on the lack of usability of the Recording History.)

It is bad enough that I have to spend half an hour a day managing what is going to be recorded, what can be deleted or not deleted. And even after that energy, the TiVo still goes out and F*cks everything up.

If there isn't disk space to record something, don't add it to the ToDo list 5 minutes before it starts airing and delete stuff randomly. Instead just don't record it like you had been saying you wouldn't do.

</rant>

blah

So, there isn't enough room on the floor. Or at least there isn't for me to have my own office. I know, I was always supposed to share, but the last guy I shared with didn't return from a medical leave of absence (he was asked not to return.)

Anyways, so I had to move into another office. Its desk was too high, so I had to swap the desks around myself. But I didn't have any choice where I went, or who I had to sit with. I had even let my manager know that I wasn't going to like this move. That's because this guy smokes. He's out right now, but I'm not looking forward to this. I may end up buying one of those air freshener things with a fan. It would hide under my desk. We'll see how bad this is by 5pm.

But moving offices takes a couple hours out of the day.

my brain. I'm surprised it even found 40% for verbal. I agree with the 0% part though.

Your brain: 0% interpersonal, 140% visual, 40% verbal, and 220% mathematical!

Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.

Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the following advice, which I think is obvious:

Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 80%.

Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 100%.

Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.

</p>

Link: The 4-Variable IQ Test written by chriscoyne on OkCupid Free Online Dating, home of the The Dating Persona Test

stop lights

So, I work near a stop light. I see this light most days as I eat lunch. I watch traffic through this light. It is a normal light, with a normal white line across the north-bound traffic indicating where to stop. But this light is right next to a bridge. In fact the expansion joint for the bridge is just 1.5-2 car lenghts south of the stop-line. 90% of traffic stops at that expansion joint and not the white line. Which is OK since all it means is that they're that much further away from the intersection.

But 90% of cars see that expansion joint as the line to stop at. So, why does 90% of traffic stop there but in every other intersection in town, 90% of traffic stops in the middle of the cross walk?

That's what I was contemplating while I was eating lunch today watching cars stop 40 feet early.

But now tis time for going on-call. blah. Though it means that I won't have to code as much the next two weeks. It does mean that I have to turn on the pager and cross my fingers that it doesn't go off as often as this last guys'.

Lawn is mowed. Now i'm breathing hard, hot and sweaty (never mind that I could see my breath outside. I wonder why I could though, it's warm outside. In fact it is 53 outside.) And I don't like the sound of my lawnmower. It kinda sounded like it was running rough. Though I guess by the time I had ran over the second stick...

My neighbors left a pile of twigs in my yard. They were from some dead bush on their property. IDK why the twigs were left on my lawn. I did put a few of them in my trash can, but most of them are still on their sidewalk. Maybe if I'm benevolent tomorrow I'll take care of a few more. hahaha! DK benevolent! hahaha, that never happens.

I wonder if I should get a weed whacker to get the stuff up against the house. I probably should. There are a few other places that the lawnmower just doesn't do a good job at. I can't really picture myself using hand-sheers, though I just might.

So my taxes are done (e-filed both fed and CO state taxes.) It's a shame that CO bases their non-resident taxes based on the tax rate of your federal income vs just the amount in-state. It would have been nicer if I'd not owed any CO taxes.

I still haven't mowed my lawn.

Ummm. what else?

Today I just can't get the brain into gear to get any real work done. This seems to be happening more and more. I know, it happened a lot in 2005, and in 2006 it was constant. But now what? I have a desk and a paycheck (ignoring that 1.1% raise--hey it wasn't the lowest on the team, probably 2nd lowest percentage though), I can't be having this problem (oh wait, this problem is part of the cause of that low raise.)

--DK
